Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig's disease, is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. ALS leads to paralysis, vital organ failure and, eventually, death.
The Ice Bucket Challenge dares nominated persons to take a video of them having a bucket of ice water poured on their heads. They have 24 hours to complete the challenge or they will have to donate $100 to the ALS foundation - or both.
As of August 21, The ALS Association has received $41.8 million in donations compared to $2.1 million during the same time period last year (July 29 to August 21). These donations have come from existing donors and 739,275 new donors to The Association.
